The Impressions - Gypsy Woman (1961)

I used to dislike this song. Not sure why, but I heard Aaron Neville's cover version recently and it made me go back to the original by The Impressions and was immediately hooked by it. I've always loved Curtis Mayfield's singing and songwriting but it's the atmosphere on this track that gets me. It's right out of a strange, dark movie that doesn't exist. I've been listening to this all week trying to figure it out and I can't. It's too angular, too weird. It was The Impressions first and biggest hit of their career.

Here's the Neville version, with Keith Richards on guitar.

  1. First time I heard this tune was by Ted Hawkins. He plays with open tuning with a glove on his left hand. All minors become majors for him.
